Indian embassy updates on Air India's Russia diversion.

On Friday, Air India announced that regulatory approvals had been received for a rescue flight from Mumbai to Krasnoyarsk, Russia, where 19 people from a flight to San Francisco and 225 passengers were stuck. Three senior officials and an interpreter are in Krasnoyarsk to help the passengers, according to the Indian Embassy in Moscow.

Air India released a statement stating, "A relief flight has been granted regulatory clearance. It is scheduled to depart Mumbai at 11:00 hrs IST and transport its passengers out of Krasnoyarsk International Airport later today."

A technical issue caused Air India to reroute flight AI183 from New Delhi to San Francisco, then towards Russia.

The flight crew discovered a possible problem in the cargo hold area on Thursday, prompting a precautionary landing at Krasnoyarsk International Airport in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia.

In a statement released on Friday, Air India stated that its local assistance was helping passengers who, due to a lack of Russian visas, were being forced to stay in the terminal building by officials.

It further stated that in order to help with the transfer of passengers to hotels, officials from the Indian embassy in Moscow have made an overnight trip and are collaborating with Russian authorities.

All passengers are now receiving meals from the terminal's food and beverage facilities, which had been closed for the evening. The airlines said that representatives from the Indian embassy in Moscow have been there all night and are coordinating with Russian authorities to enable passengers to transfer to hotels, which have been on standby the entire time.

An Air India flight on the same route was forced to detour to the isolated Russian town of Magadan due to technical issues in a similar occurrence that occurred the previous year.

At the time, there were 16 crew members and 216 passengers on board the Boeing 777-200 LR. After that, the passengers were moved to temporary quarters in a school, where they spent the next two days.

A replacement aircraft was then dispatched from Mumbai with food and other necessities. The passengers were later flown to San Francisco by boat.
