Tragic Death: Police Officer Killed in Germany Knife Attack!

A 29-year-old police officer died on Sunday after being stabbed multiple times during an attack at an anti-Islam rally in Germany.

German police officers in Mannheim mourn a colleague who died on Sunday after being stabbed two days earlier (AP).

A man with a knife attacked and injured several people on Friday in the market square in Mannheim, southwest Germany.

Five people participating in a rally by Pax Europa, a group against radical Islam, were injured in the attack. The policeman was "stabbed several times in the head" while trying to intervene, local police said.

He underwent "emergency surgery and was put in an artificial coma," but "died of his injuries" on Sunday, police said. Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed being "deeply saddened" by the police officer's death after the "terrible attack."

"His commitment to our safety deserves the highest recognition,"  If the attack is confirmed to have an Islamist motive, "that shows how strongly we must continue to fight Islamist terror," Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said.

"We must fight Islamist terrorism with determination, and we will also increase the security authorities' funding," Finance Minister Christian Lindner told the German daily Bild.

Germany has been on high alert for possible Islamist attacks since the Israel-Hamas war started, with the domestic intelligence chief warning that the risk of such attacks is "real and higher than it has been for a long time."

The country had also seen a wave of attacks on politicians at work or during the campaign for EU elections on June 9.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed concern last week about the growing trend and said Germans "must never get used to violence in political disagreements."
