Greenland applies for membership to CONCACAF

Greenland would be the 42nd member of the continental association if approved.

Greenland has applied to join CONCACAF, the organization for football in North and Central America and the Caribbean, the Football Association of Greenland said on Tuesday. Greenland would be the 42nd member of the continental association if approved.

“Our membership application to CONCACAF is a major step forward for our goal to compete at a higher level,” said Greenland national football team manager Morten Rutkjaer.

“We have worked hard to reach this point, and I believe this will inspire our players and grow our soccer culture.”

Greenland’s football governing body said it had started a strategic collaboration with the Icelandic football union to support the program’s international goals and to help organize home games.

The application to CONCACAF was officially submitted on May 13.

With about 56,000 people, Greenland would be more populous than some existing CONCACAF nations, including Anguilla and Montserrat.

“By connecting with current CONCACAF members, we will expand our knowledge and network, so we can prepare for all national and club team events,” said Rutkjaer.
