As UK Election Draws Near, Larry the Cat Waits for Sixth Prime Minister
In 14 years, Larry, the Downing Street cat, has witnessed five prime ministers come and depart. He may soon meet his first Labour leader due to the impending election.
London: Throughout the UK's 14 years of political unrest, Larry the Downing Street cat has been one consistent character.
Now that July 4th is quickly approaching and there will be a general election, the aging tabby may become prime minister for the sixth time.
He has held the position of prime minister for the Conservative party five times previously, but if polls are accurate, he is about to have his first from the Labour party.
Along with him when he left was incumbent Rishi Sunak's fox-red labrador puppy, Nova. Not that Larry would care.
Sunak's wife Akshata Murty claims that there have been some "heated exchanges" between the two. But Larry has always come out on top.
Recently, Labour leader Keir Starmer informed the BBC that his family owns a cat named Jojo his children spoil more than him.
He informed the publication Metro that they also have a hamster named Bear. If he wins, though, it's unclear if either would follow him.
Palmerston, the foreign ministry counterpart of Larry, has often engaged in catfights to determine who is the top cat. Larry has always been a staunch defender of his turf.
Eventually, his adversary went to live in the country.
Unwary pigeons and urban foxes have also been driven away, though one feathered intruder just escaped his grasp while the media watched.
