Baramulla, which voted on Monday in the fifth round of the seven-phase elections, recorded a voter turnout of 55.79 percent, according to ECI.

The Lieutenant Governor's Office, in a post on X, highlighted the significant voter turnout in the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat as a demonstration of the people's steadfast belief in democracy.

"High voter turnout, exceeding 58% in the Baramulla Parliamentary Constituency, is highly encouraging and reflects the people's resolute commitment and unwavering faith in democracy. I extend my congratulations and gratitude to the people of Baramulla for actively participating in the democratic process," the LG stated on Monday.

In response to his tweet, Prime Minister Modi expressed his appreciation on Tuesday, stating, "Compliments to my sisters and brothers of Baramulla for their unwavering commitment to democratic principles. Such active participation sets a positive trend."

The Baramulla parliamentary constituency in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a voter turnout of 55.79 percent, according to the latest data released by the Election Commission of India on Monday.

According to the ECI, this marks the highest voter turnout in the constituency over the past 35 years, spanning 8 Lok Sabha elections. The contest in Baramulla features National Conference leader Omar Abdullah against JKPC leader Sajjad Lone, with PDP's Mir Mohammad Fayaz also in contention.

The voter turnout in Baramulla stood at 5.48 percent in 1989, 46.65 percent in 1996, 41.94 percent in 1998, 27.79 percent in 1999, 35.65 percent in 2004, 41.84 percent in 2009, 39.14 percent in 2014, and 34.6 percent in 2019.

Earlier, on May 13 in the fourth phase, the Srinagar constituency recorded a voting percentage of 37.99 percent, marking the highest turnout in several decades.

This election holds significance as it is the first general election in the valley following the abrogation of Article 370 and the enactment of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are being conducted in seven phases, spanning from April 19 to June 1. The counting of votes and announcement of results are scheduled for June 4.
