"PM Modi in Wayanad: Vows on 1979 Morbi tragedy."

After visiting the parts of Wayanad district, Kerala, affected by landslides, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday evoked horrific memories of the 1979 Morbi dam tragedy in Gujarat, expressing empathy and promising the most possible support from the federal government.

During his one-day visit to Wayanad, the prime minister surveyed the damage caused by the July 30 landslides, which have left over 200 people dead and numerous others missing. He did this both aerially and on foot.

After his tour, Modi addressed a review meeting, sharing his thoughts on the Morbi disaster—one of the deadliest dam breaches in Indian history.

"I was so close to a calamity when I saw and experienced it. In Morbi, Gujarat, there used to be a dam around 45–47 years ago. After a period of intense rain, the dam collapsed, causing Morbi City to be inundated with water. More than 2,500 people perished, and the entire city was submerged in 10–12 feet of water, according to Modi's account.

"As a volunteer, I was there for roughly six months. He continued, expressing his profound empathy of the hardship endured by those in disaster-affected areas, saying, "I can well understand these circumstances and I assure you that the country and the Government of India will leave no stone unturned."

Modi evaluates the harm

Modi walked through the badly affected Chooralmala area during his visit, surveying the massive damage and interacting with locals, state officials, and rescue workers. He also spent time with survivors at a relief camp in Meppadi, including kids who had lost family members in the landslides. Images from the visit showed Modi putting his hands on the victims' shoulders and listening to them talk about their horrific experiences.

Arif Mohammed Khan, the governor of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister, and Union minister Suresh Gopi accompanied the prime minister. Following the catastrophe, the soldiers built a 190-foot Bailey bridge at Chooralmala, where they strolled together.

During his visit, Modi conducted an airborne assessment from which he viewed some of the worst-hit places, such as Punchirimattam, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala, as well as the source of the landslide near Iruvazhinji Puzha (River).

Modi gave the state of Kerala his word that the federal government will supply all resources required to support efforts at rehabilitation and reconstruction as he left Wayanad.
