Numerous tripping accidents in the northern region following an increase in demand: NRLDC

Several power system components tripped on Monday at around 2:00 pm, resulting in a significant load reduction of 16.5 GW on the electrical grid serving the northern states, according to the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC). The multiple tripping occurrence happened immediately after the region's power demand peaked at a historic 89.4 GW due to the extreme heatwave that was affecting the whole area.

The grid disaster started when a significant group of power engineers working for state and federal utilities in Punjab raised the alarm at the end of June about an expected increase in agricultural load, stating that it "may lead to an unmanageable power situation."
