San Francisco: According to officials, hundreds of people had to flee as wildfires spread around Northern California during heatwaves.

Crews have been fighting a wildfire in Butte County, some 70 miles (113 km) north of Sacramento, the capital of California, according to the Xinhua news agency.

The fast-moving fire near Oroville on Wednesday forced some 28,000 residents to evacuate, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE).

The Thompson Fire began before Tuesday noon and, by Wednesday morning, had spread to an area of almost 3 square miles (10.6 square kilometers), with no containment.

Hazy skies are allegedly seen above Sacramento, and smoke from the flames has been thrown into the city.

After burning almost 22 square miles (56 square kilometers) of the Sierra National Forest in eastern Fresno County since it was started on June 26, the largest active fire, the Basin Fire, was 26% contained.

The heat was predicted to move from north to south over California during the coming week.
