Khaleda Zia supporters in NY remove Sheikh Mujibur's image.

Supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) stormed the Bangladesh consulate in New York on Tuesday in an attempt to remove the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the former president and father of Sheikh Hasina.

On social media, a video of the incident is making the rounds. Several members can be seen assaulting the embassy while the authorities attempt to calm the situation. Some of them are wearing red, while others have the Bangladeshi flag pinned to their heads. By the time the film ends, a few supporters of former prime minister Khaleda Zia are seen taking down every portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman that was previously displayed on a table's shelf.

Thousands of demonstrators stormed the ancestral home turned museum earlier on Monday, where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the nation's first president and leader of independence, was assassinated and Hasina's father was killed. In Dhaka, they also defaced his statue.

After leading the nation since 2009, Hasina announced her resignation on Monday and left the country as anti-government rallies grew more intense. Thousands of protesters stormed her official residence, setting fires, removing furniture, and removing raw fish from the fridge. A few hours later, the former prime minister of Bangladesh touched down on a C-130 transport plane at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. According to media sources, she is probably going to travel to London, where she might apply for political asylum.

Bangladesh will establish an interim government.

Bangladesh Army leader Waker-Uz-Zaman declared shortly after Hasina's departure that the armed forces will soon establish a provisional administration. He met with Shahabuddin's press team alongside the president and important opposition figures, announcing that it had been "decided to form an interim government immediately." Who would govern the nation, though, is still up in the air.

The President also ordered the release of protest detainees and prominent opposition figure Khaleda Zia, who was imprisoned by Hasina in 2018 for graft, and dissolved the Parliament, which had been established following elections in January of this year.
