Truecaller Utilizes Microsoft's AI to Create a 'Personal Voice' for Answering Your Phone Calls: Here's How it Functions

Truecaller is introducing a new AI-driven 'personal voice' feature enabling users to generate a digital representation of their own voice. This synthesized voice can greet callers and discern the reason for their call. Integrated into Truecaller's AI assistant, this feature leverages Microsoft's Azure AI speech technology.

Truecaller's AI assistant has been a component of the application for a while. It manages tasks like answering and screening calls, taking messages, responding on behalf of the user, and recording conversations. However, the new feature enables Truecaller users to have their calls answered in their authentic voice instead of a synthetic voice by a digital assistant.

Truecaller emphasizes that the new feature will enhance the caller's engagement when interacting with the virtual assistant. To utilize this feature, users must record their voice for a few seconds during the setup of the AI assistant.

Users will also have the option to modify the caller's greeting template, provided it remains evident that the call is being answered by a 'digital' rendition of the user's voice. Furthermore, Microsoft Azure already applies watermarks to the personal voice to prevent potential misuse of the audio.

In a blog post, Raphael Mimoun, Product Director and General Manager of Truecaller Israel, emphasized that the new feature marks a significant stride "towards delivering a truly personalized and engaging communication experience."

"The personal voice feature empowers our users to employ their own voice, enabling the digital assistant to sound like them when managing incoming calls. This innovative capability not only adds a sense of familiarity and ease for the users but also underscores the power of AI in reshaping the way we interact with our digital assistants," Mimoun added.

The personal voice feature is integrated into Truecaller's Assistant and can be accessed by navigating to the personal voice option in the settings menu. Initially, the feature will only be accessible to paid users through a public beta phase, which will be introduced in India, the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Chile in the upcoming weeks.
