Hyderabad: Private engineering colleges have increased the number of seats in the computer science and related fields at the expense of core engineering disciplines due to the declining interest of students in enrolling in the mechanical and civil engineering branches.

Ultimately, this led to the State government choosing to prohibit seat conversions from core engineering branches to computer science and engineering (CSE) and related branches in an effort to safeguard the core engineering branches—civil, mechanical, and electrical.

Enrollment in key engineering fields has decreased over the past few years, from 25,377 in 2021–2022 to 21,424 in the most recent academic year.

According to government data, students are choosing to study in cutting-edge technical fields like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), cyber security, and computer science and engineering (CSE). Enrollment in these programs increased from 52,323 in the academic year 2021–22 to 69,577 in 2023–24.

Due to this, private engineering colleges are converting seats in core engineering to CSE and related fields. A similar number of seats were added to CSE branches while several managements cut the number of applicants in core branches from 120 to 30.

Consequently, over 71% of the engineering courses' convener quota seats are in the
