Searching for the Youth Fountain? Now try weight-resistance training and the gym.
The majority of the aging-related reduction in strength, flexibility, and endurance is due to behavior; the body is overexerted when it is not given enough demands. So get going right now!
This is the message from Dr. Marcas Bamman, a physiologist who has studied aging for decades and who strongly advocates for older adults to engage in weight-resistance exercise.
Men and women over 60 are the target audience. And we're discussing going to the gym and doing weight training. Don't put it off, advises Bamman.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Bamman stated, "The true fountain of youth is resistance training in many ways." "The water cooler in the gym is the fountain of youth, as I like to say."
There are biological boundaries, of course. However, Bamman asserts that behavioral factors—putting the body under too little, not too much—account for the majority of age-related declines in strength, flexibility, and endurance.
He remarked, "It hits home when I tell somebody that in four to six months their strength and muscle mass and overall muscle function will elevate to the levels of people thirty to thirty-five years younger."
It's obvious that you're too inactive, and birthdays keep coming up. You think resistance exercise could be helpful. Maybe, though, you're afraid. Avoid becoming.
Getting started
Consult a physician to ensure that no health issues are impeding your progress.
Next, locate a gym. Bigger gyms include activities for socializing when you take a day off from weight training. Additionally, Bamman advises hiring a trainer.
It does require correct advancement, but it's actually rather safe, according to Bamman. "You need to learn the movements from a qualified instructor."
A research scientist at the Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition named Bamman noted that it can be difficult to locate a trainer who is completely qualified.
"Trainer certification needs to be more stringent," he declared. "The issue is that you can obtain some certification as a trainer online tonight for $50."
