According to reports, Google has begun manually removing search responses generated by AI Overviews.
According to a recent report, Google is manually removing inaccurate responses generated by its new AI-powered search tool, Google Overviews. The decision comes after numerous cases surfaced on social media, including instances where the tool recommended applying glue on pizza to improve cheese adhesion. In response, Google is reportedly working to address issues with the tool, which was introduced at its developer conference, Google I/O 2024, on May 14.
AI Overview Responses Taken Down:
As reported by The Verge, Google is disabling AI Overviews for web queries manually. One instance highlighted involved a user querying whether any president ever owned a Ferrari, to which Google initially responded with an accurate answer, mentioning that "US President Donald Trump owned at least one Ferrari."
However, subsequent searches for the same query no longer yield AI-generated responses. Instead, Google now indicates, "An AI Overview is not available for this search." Meghann Farnsworth, Communications Manager at Google, confirmed to The Verge via email that the company is swiftly taking action to remove certain AI Overview responses to queries.
Posts on social media platforms such as X and Threads have been circulating, featuring screenshots of inaccurate responses generated by AI Overviews. Despite Meghann Farnsworth's statement to The Verge that some responses have been "doctored or that we couldn't reproduce", similar instances continue to arise, despite the responses being labeled as "Generative AI is experimental".
AI Overviews - The Issue:
Recently, several instances emerged on social media platforms where Google's AI Overviews provided inaccurate and nonsensical responses to queries, a problem associated with AI hallucination.
In one case, a user sought a solution for "cheese not sticking to pizza". In a peculiar response, AI Overviews suggested adding "⅛ cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce to give it more tackiness". It was later discovered that the source of this response was a sarcastic Reddit comment from 11 years ago.
In another instance, AI Overviews suggested that "eating at least one rock per day is recommended because rocks contain minerals and vitamins that are important for digestive health", quoting geologists. However, it was later found that this response was derived from a satirical article published by The Onion in 2021.
