The Election Commission announced on Tuesday that elections to fill five legislative council vacancies in four states would take place on July 12. Legislative council (MLC) members' resignations required elections for three of the five seats, and disqualification for the other two.

Jagadish Shettar, the former chief minister of Karnataka, had resigned as an MLC in January. After being refused a ticket to run for the Dharwad Central Assembly seat, which he represented, he left the BJP and joined the Congress.

Later, Shettar won the parliamentary election and re-joined the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections.

Swami Prasad Maurya's resignation from the House in February and his departure from the Samajwadi Party left a vacancy in the Uttar Pradesh legislative council.

The disqualification of incumbent members resulted in the vacancy of one seat each in Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.

April saw the resignation of Shaikh Mohammed Iqbal, an MLC for the YSR Congress Party, from both the party and the legislature, leaving another vacancy in the legislature.
