Wasim Akram discussed MS Dhoni’s potential retirement after RCB beat CSK in the IPL 2024 playoff race. Virat Kohli noted that watching MS Dhoni play in any stadium in India is a 'big thing' for the fans. Kohli added, "Me and him playing again, maybe for the last time, you never know – that is special." Like Kohli, legendary Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram also thinks Dhoni might leave IPL cricket after Chennai Super Kings missed the playoffs.

Players like Dhoni are rare, Akram said.

During discussions about ending his career in 2024, Dhoni shocked everyone by stepping down as CSK's captain before the IPL opener against RCB. He passed the captaincy to Indian opener Ruturaj Gaikwad for the 2024 season. With Gaikwad in charge, Dhoni continued to play as a lower-order batter in the league phase.

Dhoni's Cameo vs RCB

In CSK’s last league game against RCB, Dhoni had to score 17 runs in the final over bowled by Yash Dayal. Dhoni hit a huge six on the first ball but got out on the next, leading to CSK losing by 27 runs.

‘He’ll be done after this’: Wasim Akram on Dhoni

Talking to Sportskeeda, Akram said Dhoni would likely retire from IPL cricket after the 2024 season. “I have a gut feeling he’ll be done after this. Players like him are rare; it all depends on him," Akram said. “His legacy is not just that [110m] six. He’s done a lot for Indian cricket. He brought a new mindset, calmness, captaincy skills, and consistency. That will be his legacy," Akram added.

Glimpse of his Legacy

Dhoni scored 25 off 13 balls to keep CSK in the game against RCB. The 42-year-old scored 161 runs in 14 games for the Super Kings, batting at a strike rate of 220.54. This season, Dhoni even moved to the No.9 batting position, the lowest of his T20 career, and remained unbeaten in seven games. "For fans, the last image will be that 110-metre six at his age, showing incredible fitness. It will be just a part of his legacy,” Akram concluded.
