US President Joe Biden, 81, and former President Donald Trump, 78, engaged in spirited debate on a range of topics, including inflation, immigration, abortion rights, and foreign policy, when they took the stage for the first presidential debate on Friday in Atlanta. Biden promises to reinstate abortion legalization on a national level if re-elected. This is the first time in American history that a current president is debating a past president, making the discussion historic.
When the debate got to the subject of inflation, Biden claimed that Trump had left him with a broken economy and that he had created employment. and brought down the cost of prescription drugs. In response, Trump claimed that job growth under the Biden administration had been only "for illegal immigrants".
In addition, Donald Trump brought up the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in the first year of Joe Biden's term, branding the Democrat the worst US president ever. "The most embarrassing day in the history of our country's life," as Trump put it.
The 81-year-old President seemed to have vocal difficulties several times during the debate. Biden was repeatedly observed coughing and cleaning his throat.
The subject of inflation and the US economy came up for discussion. According to Joe Biden, Trump rewarded the wealthy during his administration, leaving him with a collapsing economy. "The economy collapsed, there were no jobs, unemployment rate rose to 15%, it was terrible," Biden stated.
