Parental consent: MeitY contacts industry due to uncertainty about technology

The IT Ministry has contacted the industry to get suggestions on how the requirement can be implemented under the upcoming data protection rules, The Indian Express has learned. The ministry was unable to come to a consensus on a technological intervention that would allow tech companies to obtain parental consent before processing children's personal data.

Tech companies must create a consent framework to check the age of minors (those under the age of 18) and obtain parental approval before allowing them to use an online service, as mandated by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. This has been a major source of contention for the business because the Act does not include recommendations for how platforms can implement age-gating.
