First Assembly Polls in J&K Since Article 370 Was Removed Will Be Held in Three Phases
In the top electoral body's efforts to comply with the Supreme Court's mandate that democracy return to Jammu and the Kashmir Valley by September 30, this is a significant step ahead.
New Delhi: The Election Commission stated on Friday afternoon that the results of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election, which has been delayed since 2014 and has been held in three phases—on September 18, September 25, and October 1—will be made public on October 4. The former state has been under governor's rule since 2018.
This is a major step towards fulfilling the Supreme Court's directive to restore democracy to Jammu and the Kashmir Valley by September 30. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared last month in Srinagar that statehood will be restored and that an election would take place shortly.
The final voter list will be released in advance of the poll, according to the EC, on August 20, the day following the conclusion of the Amarnath Yatra. Approximately 87 lakh electors, he said, are expected to vote.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stated, "The people want change... they want to script a new future," outlining the poll body's strategies for a successful and secure election in J&K.
"To assess the state of election preparation, we recently traveled to J&K. People showed a lot of enthusiasm and want to be involved in the process. "People desire early elections," he remarked, citing the "long lines" at Ladakh and J&K polling places during the Lok Sabha election.
He claimed that those lines demonstrated that people want change and wanted to be involved in it. A glimpse of democracy and hope demonstrates the desire of the populace to alter the status quo and shape their own future. Voters preferred votes to gunfire. he declared.
J&K Visit by EC, Police Reorganization
Earlier this month, an EC team under Mr. Kumar's leadership spent two days in J&K, meeting with senior police and security officials as well as members of political parties.
Additionally, there had been a significant reorganization of senior police personnel, including district chiefs and the head of J&K Police's intelligence branch, hours prior to the release of today's dates.
