The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heatwave warning for Delhi on Tuesday, which will remain in effect until June 14. This warning comes as temperatures in the national capital soar once again following a brief break from the scorching heat. Anticipated temperatures in Delhi-NCR are expected to peak at 47 degrees Celsius between June 11 and 14.
The IMD has issued an orange alert in the national capital region from June 11 to June 14. On Monday, Delhi witnessed a maximum temperature surpassing 43 degrees Celsius. Some areas recorded temperatures as high as 43.4 degrees Celsius, marking a deviation of 3.5 notches above normal.
As per the weather department's report, specific areas of Delhi saw soaring temperatures, with a maximum of 46 degrees Celsius. Narela recorded the highest at 46.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Najafgarh at 46.3 degrees Celsius, Aya Nagar at 44.7 degrees Celsius, Lodhi Road at 43.8 degrees Celsius, and Palam at 44.1 degrees Celsius.
With an orange alert issued for Delhi, the Meteorological Department predicted clear skies accompanied by heatwave conditions and gusty winds, with speeds ranging from 25 to 35 km per hour during Tuesday's daytime.
As the maximum temperature continues to hover above 40 degrees Celsius across most areas of Delhi, the minimum temperature remains steady at 30 degrees Celsius.
On Monday, regions of Gangetic West Bengal encountered heatwave to severe heatwave conditions, while heatwave conditions were observed in parts of Uttar Pradesh, southern Bihar, Delhi, and Jharkhand. Seven locations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh recorded temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius, with Prayagraj topping the list as the hottest place in the country at 46.3 degrees Celsius.
The beginning of a new heatwave spell is anticipated to affect regions including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal, according to reports from the Met office.
While heatwave conditions resurface in northwestern India, certain areas of southern states are witnessing rainfall. Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, and parts of Karnataka experienced heavy rains in recent days, with forecasts suggesting light to moderate rainfall throughout the week.
