Cyclist Lopez receives four-year ban for doping

Miguel Angel Lopez, a Colombian cyclist, has received a four-year ban for doping.

The International Cycling Union (UCI), the governing body of the sport, stated that the 30-year-old violated regulations by using and possessing a banned substance before the 2022 Giro d'Italia.

According to UCI, Lopez used a prohibited hormone called Menotropin. He was temporarily suspended on July 25, 2023, and the ban will last until July 24, 2027.

In December 2022, Lopez was dismissed from the Astana team due to allegations of connections with a Spanish doctor who was being investigated for involvement in a doping network.

The UCI relied on evidence provided by Spanish law enforcement and the national doping agency in their case against Lopez.

Lopez achieved third place in both the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana in 2018. Additionally, he previously secured a stage victory in the 2020 Tour de France.
