Gujarat High Court Blocks Release of Junaid Khan's Film Following Hindu Group's Plea

As reported by India Today, the debut film "Maharaj" starring Junaid Khan, Aamir Khan's eldest son, has faced a setback. The Gujarat High Court has halted its release following a plea from a Hindu group, expressing concerns over potential violence. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, the film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat in a significant role.

Moreover, the complaint emphasizes that the film is scheduled for release without sufficient promotional materials, such as a trailer, which could hinder a clear understanding of its storyline and potentially cause significant offense. Responding to these issues, Justice Sangeeta Vishen of the Gujarat High Court issued an interim order to suspend the movie's release in any format. The case is set for a hearing on June 18.

The synopsis from the streaming platform outlines "Maharaj," set in 1862 during a time when India had only three universities. Rabindranath Tagore was just a year old, and the aftermath of the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny fueled aspirations for independence. The film tells the story of Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer based in Mumbai's Elphinstone College. Influenced by scholar-leader Dadabhai Naoroji, Mulji was a vocal advocate for women's rights and social reform, particularly addressing issues like widow remarriage and the plight of the oppressed. The narrative culminates in the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, triggered by allegations against a prominent figure. This case gained widespread public attention and legal scrutiny, marking it as a pivotal moment in history and showcasing Mulji's bravery and dedication to justice.
