Heatwave Alerts in Indian States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for severe heatwave conditions in Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh on May 29. Scorching heatwave conditions persist across various regions, with the IMD issuing a 'red' alert for Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Madhya Pradesh. The maximum temperature in Delhi is predicted to reach 46 degrees. An 'orange' alert has also been issued for severe heatwave conditions in Uttar Pradesh.

Heatwave Forecast

The IMD forecasts heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh from May 27th-29th, with gradual reduction thereafter. Heatwave conditions are expected in isolated pockets of east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Jammu division until May 29, and in isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh until May 30.

Recorded Temperatures

On Tuesday, Churu in Rajasthan recorded the highest temperature in the country at 50.5 degrees Celsius. Other cities with high temperatures include Sirsa in Haryana (50.3°C), Mungeshpur in Delhi (49.9°C), and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh (49.0°C).

Weather Patterns

IMD director-general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra attributes the heatwave conditions to the absence of western disturbances over northwest and central India. However, relief is expected after May 30 with the arrival of a fresh western disturbance.

Rainfall Alerts

The IMD has issued a 'red' alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in northeastern states on May 29 due to Cyclone 'Remal'. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are expected to receive heavy rainfall. Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh may witness heavy rainfall from May 29 to June 1. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Kerala, Mahe, Andaman, Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep until May 31. Additionally, isolated to scattered light rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Muzzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh until May 31.
