BCCI Receives Surprise MS Dhoni Proposal as India Coach from Virat Kohli’s Close Connection Amid Gambhir Reports
Gautam Gambhir is seen as the top candidate for India's head coach, but Virat Kohli's childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, suggests MS Dhoni is a better choice.
The deadline to apply for the head coach role for the Indian men's cricket team ended on May 27, right after IPL 2024 finished. BCCI hasn't revealed who has applied but hinted that the new coach will likely be Indian. Reports indicate Gautam Gambhir is the favorite. However, Rajkumar Sharma, Virat Kohli's childhood coach, thinks otherwise.
The respected coach mentioned legendary cricketer MS Dhoni. "It will be interesting to see who applies. I believe the coach should be Indian. If Dhoni retires, he could be a great choice. He has played a lot and won major tournaments," he said on India News' show CRICIT PREDICTA.
Dhoni hasn't officially retired from the IPL. Many thought IPL 2024 was his last, but the Chennai Super Kings icon has kept everyone wondering. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanath even said he expects Dhoni to return for another season.
'Dhoni Will Have Dressing Room Respect'
Rajkumar Sharma said Dhoni will command respect in the dressing room. He is a proven leader with two World Cup wins. Dhoni managed big names well when he was captain.
"Dhoni will be respected in the dressing room. He has played this format for a long time. Proper planning and team management are crucial. When Dhoni became captain, the team had legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Gautam Gambhir, and Yuvraj Singh. Despite this, Dhoni managed the team excellently," Sharma added.
Former Bowler Atul Wasan’s Perspective
Former India fast bowler Atul Wasan thinks T20 cricket should have mentors instead of coaches. "I believe the coach’s role should be replaced by a mentor and a T20 expert, like AB de Villiers. The West Indies dominated world cricket from 1979 to 1989 without a coach. India won the 1983 and 2007 World Cups not because of coaches. A coach’s job is limited to logistics. The responsibility for wins or losses shouldn’t be on the coach. In football, there are managers, not coaches. Similarly, cricket should have managers," he said.
Rahul Dravid’s contract as India's head coach will end after the T20 World Cup this year.
