Virat Kohli's Aggregate Shocks IPL Fans: A 2024 Recap

Virat Kohli's Record, KKR's Dominance, Sunil Narine's Brilliance: Key Figures of IPL 2024

From the explosive partnership of Head and Abhishek to Sunil Narine's outstanding all-round play, here are the stats behind IPL 2024's biggest stories.

9.56: Highest Run-Rate in a Season

This season saw batsmen outperform bowlers like never before. The average run-rate was an incredible 9.56, the highest ever. The previous record was 8.99 in 2023. A total of 1260 sixes were hit, surpassing 1124 in 2023. Seven of the eight highest totals in IPL history happened this season. The record for the highest successful chase was broken twice. There were eight 250-plus totals this season; the last 16 editions had only two.

13.46: Head-Sharma Partnership Run-Rate

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma revolutionized powerplay batting, overpowering bowlers throughout the league. They set the record for the highest team total in the powerplay and chased LSG’s 165 in under 10 overs in Hyderabad. Their 691 runs in 15 innings included three hundred and two fifty partnerships at a strike rate of 224.3. SRH had the highest powerplay run-rate (11.2) thanks to their explosive start, but they faltered in the playoffs.

35.1 & 21.9: KKR's Best Batting and Bowling Averages

KKR was the most consistent team, with the best batting average (35.1) and bowling average (21.9). They also had the highest run-rate (10.7) and best bowling strike rate (14.3). Four KKR batters scored over 350 runs, with three scoring at a rate above 150. Five KKR bowlers took 17+ wickets. Varun Chakravarthy led with 21 wickets, and Sunil Narine was the most economical bowler after Bumrah. KKR lost just three matches, tying with the Royals' record from 2008.

488 & 17: Sunil Narine's MVP Season

Sunil Narine became the third player to score 400+ runs and take 15+ wickets in a season. He scored 488 runs at a strike rate of 180.7 and took 17 wickets with an economy of 6.7. Narine hit his first T20 century and had four other key performances, scoring 40+ at a rate above 200. His off-spin kept opponents under 7.5 runs per over in 11 matches.

3-34 & 2-14: Mitchell Starc’s Playoff Performances

Mitchell Starc, despite an inconsistent league stage, delivered Player of the Match performances in both Qualifier 1 and the Final. He dismissed Travis Head in Qualifier 1 and Abhishek Sharma in the Final, silencing critics. Starc became the first player to win the award twice in the playoffs in a single season.

741: Virat Kohli’s Highest Run Total

Virat Kohli was the top run-scorer with 741 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 154.7, including one hundred and five fifties. He became the second batter to score 700+ runs in a season twice. Kohli was consistently ahead, with 158 more runs than the next highest scorer

His aggressive play saw him scoring quickly, with a strike rate of 161 off the first 10 deliveries and 137.1 against spinners, his best since 2017.

10 & 20: Bumrah’s Exceptional Show Despite MI's Worst Season

MI had a dismal season, finishing last with 10 losses from 14 matches, their worst performance ever. Despite this, Jasprit Bumrah was outstanding, taking 20 wickets at an economy rate of 6.48, the best in the tournament. He excelled with the new ball and at the death, maintaining the lowest economy rate in both phases. Bumrah took three or more wickets in four matches and kept his economy below 7 in nine games, a remarkable feat in a high-scoring season.
