According to the announcement, the man's family noticed something was off when one of the dogs drove nearly four kilometers to the campsite where he was staying.

The next day, his family found his car and dialed 911 because they were unable to get to it due to the steep terrain. Authorities heard the man cry out for assistance and discovered him some 100 yards (91 meters) from the automobile when they arrived.

According to the press release, he was able to crawl out of the automobile following the collision. Chainsaws were used by US Forest Service personnel to cut a route through the undergrowth so that search and rescue teams could install an intricate rope system that connected both sides of the valley.

As a torrent raged below, officers used the ropes as a pulley system to move the man to the other side of the valley once they were able to get to him. Images released by the sheriff's office revealed what happened.

According to officials, the man was evacuated to a nearby hospital. At the site of the collision, his other three dogs were discovered to be alive.
