The politician who has successfully navigated the terrain between separatism and mainstream politics garners the hitherto boycotting support and capitalizes on resentment over Article 370 to record a massive win against Omar Abdullah.
Few upsets can compare to this one in size. Held for the previous five years in Tihar Jail on charges of money laundering linked to purported funding of terrorism, Engineer Rashid was physically assaulted by BJP leaders in the J&K Assembly and was perceived as a separatist voice. Running as an Independent, he defeated former chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday by garnering over two lakh votes.
Prior to Rashid entering the race, it was thought to be between two strong candidates: Sajad Lone of the People's Conference and Omar Abdullah of the National Conference.
