The JSP head turned things around. Meet Pawan Kalyan, the NDA's Andhra lynchpin and current Deputy CM.
Once written off as a political leader, Kalyan, also referred to as the "Power Star," is now maybe Andhra Pradesh's most influential politician, second only to Chandrababu Naidu.
The 55-year-old president of the JanaSena Party (JSP), K Pawan Kalyan, was named deputy chief minister by Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu on Friday. He will be responsible for Panchayati Raj, Rural Development, and additional portfolios including Science and Technology, Environment and Forests, and Rural Drinking Water Supply.
The first-time victor of the 55-year-old actor-turned-politician, who played a key role in uniting the Andhra National Democratic Alliance (NDA), came from the Pithapuram Assembly constituency in the Kakinada district. A year after being written off as a political leader, Kalyan—also referred to as the "Power Star"—turned things around and assisted Naidu in overthrowing the administration of Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.
