A survey suggests that very few people are regularly using "much hyped" artificial intelligence (AI) products like ChatGPT. Researchers surveyed 12,000 people across six countries, including the UK, and found that only 2% of British respondents use such tools on a daily basis. However, the study highlights that young people, particularly those aged 18 to 24, are the most enthusiastic adopters of this technology.

Dr. Richard Fletcher, the lead author of the report from the Reuters Institute and Oxford University, noted a "mismatch" between the hype surrounding AI and the actual public interest in it. The study focused on generative AI tools, which can provide human-like responses to text prompts, images, audio, and video. ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, brought generative AI into the spotlight, prompting significant investment from tech companies in developing similar features.

Despite the attention and funding poured into generative AI, the research suggests that it has not yet become a routine part of people's internet usage. Dr. Fletcher stated that a large portion of the public lacks interest in generative AI, with 30% of UK respondents indicating that they are not aware of prominent products like ChatGPT.

The study also explored public perceptions about the impact of generative AI. While many anticipate significant societal impacts, particularly in news, media, and science, there are differing opinions about its overall effect. Optimists foresee benefits such as economic growth and medical advancements, while pessimists express concerns about potential negative consequences, including impacts on job security and threats to humanity.

The survey was conducted through an online questionnaire in six countries: Argentina, Denmark, France, Japan, the UK, and the USA.
