RMP Leader Hariharan Arrested Over Sexist Remarks Against Shailaja, Manju Warrier
Kozhikode, Revolutionary Marxist Party leader K.S. Hariharan was arrested on Friday for allegedly making sexist comments about senior CPI leader K.K. Shailaja and Malayalam actress Manju Warrier during a recent speech. Vadakara police recorded his arrest and then released him on station bail, an officer said. This action was taken based on a complaint from the All India Democratic Women's Association, a Left group. On May 12, the police charged Hariharan under IPC Sections 509 and 153.
After his release, Hariharan told reporters that many people in Kerala make controversial statements in speeches without facing charges. He added that after his speech, he and his party leader K.K. Rema were attacked on social media. "We have decided to address it legally and politically," he said. Hariharan admitted his remarks were wrong and expressed regret. He also mentioned that bombs were thrown at his house after the incident, but no one has been caught. An unknown group on a two-wheeler threw explosives at his house around 8:15 PM on May 12, he claimed.
Hariharan made the offensive remark on the night of May 11 at a meeting in Vadakara, which was opened by the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, V.D. Satheesan. The event was organized in response to claims by the ruling LDF that UDF workers created a fake video of Shailaja, a candidate in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The remark caused a political uproar, with his party leaders and the UDF openly criticizing him, saying he should not have made such comments against any woman. Later, Hariharan posted on Facebook that friends and journalists informed him he had made an "inappropriate" remark during the speech. He also expressed regret for his comment in the post.
