Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, spoke with the prisoners during a visit to relief camps in the districts of Churachandpur and Jiribam, Manipur, on Monday. These aid camps are housing those who have been displaced by the ethnic violence in the northeastern state, which has claimed over 200 lives since May of last year.

Gandhi is making his first visit to Manipur, escorted by top Congressmen, following the Congress's victory in the state's two Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress stated in a post on X that "his third visit to Manipur post-violence shows his unwavering commitment to the people's cause."

A few weeks after ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 of last year, Gandhi made his first trip there. In January 2024, he also set out on his 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' from the state.

The former president of the Congress started off by going to Jiribam Higher Secondary School to see a relief camp.

"He asked them what they needed as well. Gandhi was informed by a girl that they had not received any visits from the chief minister or the prime minister. Meghachandra added, "She also asked Gandhi to bring the issue before Parliament.

The head of the state Congress reported that thousands of people flocked to Jiribam to welcome Gandhi, and many of them broke down in tears as they spoke to him.
