The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a 'red' alert for extremely heavy rainfall in two districts, Idukki and Pathanamthitta, on Thursday. This comes a day after torrential rains hit various parts of the state. Additionally, the weather department has issued an 'orange' alert in other districts.

Here are 10 updates on the situation with Kerala rains:

  1. The IMD bulletin predicts heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Kerala on May 24 and May 25. Thunderstorms with gusty winds and lightning are expected in one or two places from May 23 to May 26.

  2. According to the weather department, high waves ranging from 0.4 to 3.3 meters and sea incursions are expected along the Kerala coast from Vizhinjam in the south to Kasaragod in the north until Thursday night.

  3. On Wednesday, extremely heavy rains hit the southern state, prompting the IMD to issue a 'red alert' in five districts: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki.

  4. An 'orange' alert was issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, while a 'yellow' alert was issued for Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

  5. An 'orange' alert suggests 'very heavy rainfall' ranging from 6 cm to 20 cm, while a 'red' alert indicates 'heavy to extremely heavy rains of over 20 cm', and a 'yellow' alert indicates 'heavy rainfall between 6 to 11 cm'.

  6. Four fatalities were reported due to the torrential rains across various districts of Kerala on Wednesday, as per the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA).
