The Knight Riders last played an IPL final in 2021 but lost to Chennai Super Kings. Last year, they finished sixth, but the rise of players like Rinku Singh set the stage for a strong 2024. Even though Rinku Singh was quieter this year, Gambhir's influence brought Sunil Narine back as an opener. This move paid off as Narine scored the most runs for KKR (488 in 15 matches).
In the final, Rahmanullah Gurbaz also played a key role, scoring 39 runs and taking three catches. His return from Kabul, where he attended to his ill mother, was timely as he replaced Phil Salt, who had to leave for national duty.
Will Gambhir Stay at KKR?
Though Gambhir returned this year, he might leave his mentorship role at KKR if the BCCI appoints him as Team India's head coach. Gambhir is a top contender to replace Rahul Dravid, who will leave after the T20 World Cup next month. While no official statements have been made, Gambhir is widely reported to be leading the race for the head coach position.
