Celine Dion performs at Paris Olympics despite illness

Paris: Despite her battles with the stiff person syndrome, Celine Dion made an emotional comeback to the stage on Friday during the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Paris.

Dion had a standout performance to finish the ceremony, after Lady Gaga and other vocalists from Europe.

Dion performed a rendition of Edith Piaf's "Hymne A L'Amour" while positioned beneath the Eiffel Tower. The Canadian singer performed in the downpour next to a piano while decked out in a shimmering, beaded attire. Many others were moved by her obvious emotion as she ended the song.

Dion has not performed since December 2022, when she was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome.

The ailment caused muscle spasms and stiffness, so the singer had taken a hiatus from performing. "I Am: Celine Dion," her latest documentary, discusses her hardships and her aspirations to return to performing.

The Olympic ceremony on Friday night was historic since it was the first to be held outside of a stadium. It displayed the Eiffel Tower and other famous Parisian sites.
