consumption expenditure survey 2022–2023: households' biggest spending was on processed foods; the highest spending was on milk in Rajasthan and Kerala, and meats in Haryana.
When it comes to the overall amount spent on food in rural areas across other states like Rajasthan (35.5%), Punjab (34.7%), Gujarat (25.5%), Uttar Pradesh (22.6%), and Madhya Pradesh (21.5%), "milk and milk products" were preferred over "beverages and processed food."
Among food items, households in both rural and urban parts of the nation spent the most portion of their consumption budget on "beverages, refreshments, and processed food" in 2022–2023. However, certain states defied the national trend and preferred other goods, such as "milk and milk products" and "egg, fish, and meat."
In the detailed report of the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2022–23 released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Friday, it was shown that among all major states, households in rural areas spent the most on "milk and milk products" (41.7%), while Kerala spent the most on "egg, fish & meat" (23.5%).
