FIR filed over "obscene" comment to Kirti Chakra recipient's widow.
Case filed in accordance with the Information Technology (IT) Act and Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita Act sections
New Delhi: Officials stated on Saturday that the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) division of Delhi Police has filed a formal complaint (FIR) about an alleged sexual comment made on X about the widow of Kirti Chakra Captain Anshuman Singh.
On Monday, the National Commission for Women (NCW) took a suo motu cognisance of the situation and lodged a report with Delhi Police.
A police officer stated that the FIR has been filed at the IFSO unit in accordance with the pertinent provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act and the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita Act.
According to him, the social networking site has also been contacted to request information regarding the handle that allegedly posted the offensive statement.
The NCW cited specific legal provisions that the comment violates in a letter sent on Monday. These provisions include Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which penalizes acts intended to insult a woman's modesty, and Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000, which addresses the consequences of publishing or transmitting offensive material online.
The committee further urged a thorough response plan and a prompt, impartial examination into the situation.
