Melbourne: According to UN and police sources, a gang in three isolated settlements in the north of Papua New Guinea is said to have slain at least 26 people.

It was a very horrible thing. There were men, women, and children there when I got closer. James Baugen, the acting provincial police commander for the South Pacific island nation's East Sepik province, stated on Friday that "a group of thirty young men killed them."

According to Baugen, every home in the villages had been set on fire, and the people who were still hiding out at the police station were afraid to identify the assailants.

"Crocodiles carried some of the bodies that were left over the night into the swamp." The location of their deaths was all that was seen. The attackers were hiding, according to Baugen, who also stated that "there were heads chopped off." No arrests had been made as of yet.


In a statement released on Wednesday, UN Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated that the attacks took place on July 16 and July 18.

Turk expressed his horror at the sudden and fatal violence that broke out in Papua New Guinea, claiming that it was caused by a disagreement about who owned the land and lakes and who had the right to utilize them.
