20% decline in spice shipments due to worries about MDH and Everest product safety

Spice shipments fell 20% year over year in May despite an overall increase in India's commodities exports, according to official trade data issued on Friday. This comes after higher-than-allowable quantities of the pesticide ethylene oxide (EtO) were discovered in MDH and Everest shipments in Hong Kong and Singapore in April.

Spice exports had increases of 51% and 12% year over year in March and April, respectively; but, in May, they fell by 20.28% to $361.17 million. Additionally, on a sequential basis, spice exports decreased by 10% in May from $405.62 million in April of this year.
