Worsening flood situation in Assam: over 1.6 lakh people affected, over 30 dead
Assam Floods: With 1,52,133 people under water, Karimganj is the district most severely impacted, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Guwahati: In 15 districts, severe flooding in Assam has killed over 30 persons and impacted over 1.61 lakh others. Five persons were killed in a landslide in the Karimganj district's Badarpur area, including a mom and her three daughters and a three-year-old boy.
Tuesday night, there was a landslide in the community of Gainachora. With the deaths from the landslide, Assam has now had over 30 fatalities since Cyclone Remal made landfall in the state in May.
"A landslide in the Gainachora (Bendargool) village area under the Badarpur police station was reported last night at 12.45 am. The Badarpur police station's officer-in-charge, his employees, and members of the SDRF hurried to the scene and conducted a rescue effort as soon as they received the information. Five victims were pulled from the wreckage after three hours of work, according to Partha Protim Das, the Karimganj district superintendent of police.
Roymun Nessa, 55, and her daughters Sahida Khanam, 18, Jahida Khanam, 16, and Hamida Khanam, 11, were identified as the victims. Mehdi Hassan, son of Mahimuddin, was identified as the three-year-old child.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that Karimganj, where 1,52,133 people are stranded by flooding, is the district most severely affected. The disaster has impacted 54,877 animals as well as 1,378.64 hectares of cropland. 24 revenue circles and 470 settlements are currently under water.
There are 43 relief camps housing 5,114 persons as a result of ongoing relief efforts. But the amount of the damage to roads, bridges, embankments, and other infrastructure has made it more difficult to provide help and support. There are worries that the Kopili river in Kampur is reportedly flowing above dangerous levels.
