Wasim Akram Shares His 'Gut Feeling' on MS Dhoni's Future after CSK Exits IPL 2024 Playoffs

Wasim Akram spoke about MS Dhoni’s retirement after RCB edged out CSK in the IPL 2024 playoff race.

Virat Kohli noted that watching MS Dhoni play in any Indian stadium is a 'big thing' for fans. "Playing with him again, maybe for the last time, you never know – that is special," Kohli said, as the former RCB player fueled MSD's retirement talks before the IPL 2024 playoffs. Similarly, legendary Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram also suggested that Dhoni might retire from IPL cricket after CSK missed the playoffs.

Dhoni's Unique Presence in Cricket

Players like Dhoni are rare, Akram said. Amid retirement speculations, Dhoni surprised everyone by stepping down as CSK's captain right before the IPL opener against RCB. He handed the captaincy to Indian opener Ruturaj Gaikwad for the 2024 season. Under Gaikwad’s leadership, Dhoni continued to bat in the lower order during the league phase.

Dhoni's Performance Against RCB

In CSK’s final league game against RCB, Dhoni was asked to score 17 runs in the last over bowled by Yash Dayal. Dhoni started strong with a huge six but was dismissed on the next ball, resulting in CSK losing the virtual playoff qualifier by 27 runs.

Akram's Thoughts on Dhoni's Future

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Akram said he believes Dhoni will retire after the 2024 season. “I have a gut feeling he’ll be done after this. Players like him come once in a lifetime. It’s up to him," Akram said. “His legacy is more than just that [110m] six. He’s done a lot for Indian cricket by bringing a new mindset, calmness as a captain, and consistency. This will be his legacy," Akram added.

Glimpses of Dhoni's Legacy

Dhoni scored 25 off 13 balls to keep CSK’s hopes alive against RCB. The 42-year-old scored 161 runs in 14 games with a striking rate of 220.54 in the league phase. This season, Dhoni batted at the No.9 position, the lowest of his T20 career, and remained unbeaten in seven games. "For fans, the lasting image will be that 110-meter six at his age, showcasing incredible fitness. It’s just a glimpse of his legacy,” Akram concluded.
