New Delhi: The current MVP of Indian cricket, Virat Kohli, has called on the country to rally behind its athletes headed for the Olympics, encouraging the public to stand with him as "they inch closer to the podium with dogged determination" in the quadrennial spectacle that gets underway in Paris on July 26.

In a little more than a minute-long social media video, Kohli stated that it is time for India to be acknowledged as a major player in international sports. The film featured some sportsmen headed to Paris, including boxing prospect Nishant Dev and javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra.

"Once upon a time, all that the world knew about India was that it was home to elephants and snake charmers. Over time, things have evolved. We are now regarded as the largest democracy and a major hub for technology worldwide," he remarked.

We are well-known for Bollywood, cricket, start-up unicorns, and having the world's fastest-growing economy. What will be our wonderful country's next major thing? That means there will be more gold, silver, and bronze, he continued.


He continued by addressing Indian sports supporters, pleading with them to cheer on the 118 athletes who would be trying to surpass the nation's record of seven medals won at the previous Games in Tokyo.

"Hungry for medals, our brothers and sisters are on their way to Paris." When our athletes take the track, field, court, or ring, a billion of us will be watching them, anxious and excited. There will be a chorus of voices screaming "India, India, India" in every neighborhood and corner of India. Please join me in recalling their faces as they hesitantly approach the platform while proudly brandishing the Tiranga.
