'Virat Kohli a great player but...': Sourav Ganguly's concern as India face combination headache ahead of T20 World Cup

Sourav Ganguly emphasized that for Team India to succeed in the T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli needs to bat freely at the top of the order.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly believes it's essential for India if Virat Kohli bats with the same freedom in the T20 World Cup as he did in the IPL this year. He advises that Kohli should open the innings with captain Rohit Sharma.

Kohli was the highest run-scorer in IPL 2024 and played aggressively in the middle overs, silencing his critics.

Virat Kohli has been in fantastic form in the shortest format. The RCB star scored 741 runs in 15 matches and was consistent with an average of 61.75. However, it was his strike rate of 154.70—his best ever in an IPL season—that stood out.

At the start of the season, Kohli was criticized for his strike rate in the middle overs against spinners, but he turned things around by adding shots like the slog sweep to his game.

Former BCCI president Ganguly stated that for Team India to perform well in the T20 WC, Kohli needs to bat freely at the top of the order.

"I would open with Virat and Rohit. I want Virat to bat the way he did for RCB in the second half of the IPL. He has to bat with freedom.

Needless to say, he is a great player, but for India to do well, Virat will have to bat with freedom like he did in the IPL. So my choice would be Virat and Rohit at the top of the order," Ganguly told Revsportz.
