"Separate Teams For...": Gautam Gambhir's 'Proposals' to BCCI for Becoming India's Coach - Report

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir is scheduled to interview for the men's cricket team head coach position in Mumbai with BCCI secretary Jay Shah and other officials, sources say. "Gauti (Gautam Gambhir) will be traveling to Mumbai today around 12 pm for the interview at BCCI Headquarters. It is almost certain that he will be the next head coach, as the BCCI has agreed to the terms he presented. The new head coach of the men's cricket team will be announced soon. The meeting is scheduled between 2-4 pm,” a source familiar with BCCI matters told IANS.

Gambhir presented a few demands to the BCCI for the head coach position, including full control over the team and separate squads for white-ball and red-ball formats. IANS understands that the BCCI has already accepted these terms and is eager to appoint him to the role.

The BCCI formally announced the opening for applications for the India head coach position, with a deadline set for May 27.

According to the job description, the new head coach for the India men's team will oversee all three formats from July 2024 until December 2027.

Dravid initially took over as India's head coach following the 2021 T20 World Cup in November. His contract concluded with the 2023 ODI World Cup held at home and was subsequently extended until this year's T20I tournament.

During a recent event, Gambhir expressed his desire, stating, "There is no greater privilege than coaching the national team."

"I would cherish the opportunity to coach the Indian team. Representing 1.4 billion Indians and others worldwide is an immense honor," the 42-year-old remarked.

Gambhir was a member of India's victorious team in the T20 World Cup of 2007 and the ODI World Cup side of 2011.
