London [UK]: The wealth of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, has grown significantly, increasing by more than 120 million pounds in the past year. This brings their total wealth to 651 million pounds, according to UK-based iTV. The latest annual Sunday Times Rich List showed their wealth increased a lot, even though the UK billionaire boom ended due to tough economic conditions.
Despite a slowdown among UK billionaires due to tough economic times, Sunak and Murty's wealth has grown significantly, now at 651 million pounds, up from 529 million pounds last year. This increase is mainly due to Murty's stake in Infosys, the Indian IT company co-founded by her billionaire father. Murty's Infosys shares went up in value by 108.8 million pounds, reaching nearly 590 million pounds in a year.
However, the couple's current wealth is still below its 2022 peak of about 730 million pounds. The rise in wealth isn't just for Sunak and Murty; King Charles's fortune has also grown, reaching 610 million pounds from 600 million pounds last year. Despite these individual gains, the overall number of British billionaires is decreasing. The count has fallen for the third year in a row, from a high of 177 in 2022 to 165 this year. This drop is due to factors like high borrowing rates reducing private wealth and some individuals choosing to leave the country.
Robert Watts, who compiles the rich list, suggests that Britain's billionaire boom may have peaked. He notes that while many local entrepreneurs have lost wealth, some global super-rich who once preferred the UK are now looking for opportunities elsewhere. This trend raises concerns about the impact on the British economy, as many livelihoods depend on the fortunes of the super-rich.
The latest data shows that Britain's 350 wealthiest individuals and families have a combined wealth of 795.36 billion pounds. Gopi Hinduja and his family, who run the Indian conglomerate Hinduja Group, top the list again. Their wealth has increased to 37.2 billion pounds from 35 billion pounds last year. However, not all billionaires have seen their fortunes grow. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Manchester United investor and Ineos founder, saw the biggest drop, with his net worth falling by over 6 billion pounds to 23.52 billion pounds. Sir James Dyson's wealth decreased to 20.8 billion pounds from 23 billion pounds, and Sir Richard Branson's fortune dropped to 2.4 billion pounds from 4.2 billion pounds due to issues with his company, Virgin Galactic.
