NBA TV Shake-Up-Warner Bros. Discovery Holds the Key!

Since the 1980s, the league and TNT have conducted business together. That collaboration is in danger.

NBA TV Shake-Up-Warner Bros. Discovery Holds the Key!

The NBA's Search for TV Partners

The NBA has been collaborating with TNT since the 1980s. However, this long-standing partnership is now at risk. As reported by CNBC, Comcast’s NBCUniversal is making a move to snatch the NBA's game package with a hefty $2.5 billion per-year bid.

On April 22, the NBA ended its exclusive window for renewing deals with its current media partners, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery. Since then, it has outlined plans to renew with Disney, bring Amazon on board as a new partner, and sell another package to either Warner Bros. Discovery or NBCUniversal.

Warner Bros. Discovery is still in talks with the NBA about retaining the rights, but sources suggest that the league is leaning towards not renewing with its current partner.

If the NBA opts for NBCUniversal's offer, Warner Bros. Discovery would have the option to match it. However, the legalities around this are unclear, which could potentially lead to a legal dispute.

Concerns have been raised about Warner Bros. Discovery's financial capacity to handle the $2.5 billion annual expenditure on the NBA, given its market valuation and debt.

Comcast's financial strength is seen as more reliable by NBA officials

Meanwhile, Comcast's financial strength is seen as more reliable by NBA officials, considering their higher market capitalization and lower leverage ratio. The new package, which includes fewer games, is expected to fetch more than double the previous price due to the introduction of a third partner, likely Amazon.

Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, and Fox plan to launch a joint sports streaming platform named Venu. However, losing the NBA rights would devalue the service, as NBCUniversal and Amazon are not part of it.

Warner Bros. Discovery licenses rights to other sports leagues, ensuring it will have NBA coverage until the end of the 2024-25 season.

Despite potential setbacks, Warner Bros. Discovery could redirect funds saved from losing NBA rights towards other sports ventures, such as MLB or UFC. ESPN is also gearing up to launch its own streaming service in 2025.
