Telangana farmer suicides dropped 686.5% from 2015 to 2022.
Data from the NCRB indicates that the BRS government's proactive actions after the State's formation were responsible for the notable decrease in farmer suicides.
Hyderabad: Between 2015 and 2022, Telangana saw a sharp drop in the number of farmer suicides—nearly 686.5%. Together with this notable decline, Telangana's percentage of farmer suicides in India has decreased, from 11.1% in 2015 to just 1.57 percent in 2022.
The number of suicides among people in the farming industry, including farmers and tenant farmers, was startlingly high in 2015. This is according to an analysis of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics from 2015 to 2022. Between 2014 and 2015, the number of farmer suicides nationwide increased by 42%, mostly as a result of the severe drought. There were 1,400 farming-related suicides in Telangana in 2015 compared to approximately 990 in 2014.
12,602 people in the farming sector, including 8,007 farmers and tenant farmers, committed suicide in India in 2015, according to the NCRB's "Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India" reports. Approximately 1,400 of these deaths occurred in Telangana, of which 1,358 were farmers or tenant farmers.
In India, there were 11,290 farming-related suicides by 2022, of which 5,207 were farmer and tenant farmer suicides.
