Maharashtra: Ex-Malegaon Mayor Abdul Malik of AIMIM, Shot in Nashik
Abdul Malik Mohammed Yunus Isa, the former mayor of Malegaon and a key leader of Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM party, was shot by two unknown attackers in Nashik on Monday morning.
Police said the shooting occurred around 1:20 am when Malik was sitting outside a shop on Old Agra Road. Two people on a motorbike fired three shots at him.
Malik was taken to a nearby hospital, where his condition is stable, reported news agency PTI. He was injured in the chest and leg.
The police have filed a case against the two unidentified attackers under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 307 (attempt to murder). No arrests have been made yet. Further investigation is ongoing.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi called the attack a “conspiracy” and urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the police to act quickly. “AIMIM Malegaon president & former mayor Abdul Malik was shot three times last night. He has been taken to Nashik for treatment. I spoke to his brother Dr. Khalid on the phone. We stand firmly with Abdul Malik’s family. @mieknathshinde @DGPMaharashtra must take immediate steps. This is a conspiracy and the murderers should be arrested as soon as possible.”
In February this year, AIMIM leader Abdul Salam was shot dead by unknown attackers in Bihar’s Gopalganj district. The incident happened when Salam, who had unsuccessfully contested the Gopalganj assembly seat by-election in November 2022, was on his way to catch a train. Four attackers on two motorcycles fired on him while he was riding with a relative.
Salam was the second AIMIM leader shot dead within a few months. In December, AIMIM's district president from Bihar's Siwan was also shot dead.
