A recent study published in The Lancet Global Health journal revealed that 57% of women in India and 42% of men had insufficient physical activity levels, mirroring trends observed across South Asia. Nearly half of Indian adults failed to meet recommended levels of physical activity in 2022. Researchers, including those from the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighted that the South Asian region ranked second globally for inadequate physical activity among adults, trailing only the high-income Asia Pacific region.

India's Fitness Challenge:
As health trends continue to decline, it's imperative to embark on a fitness journey now and implement actionable steps to increase physical activity and embrace regular exercise. Dr. Manish Pendse, Senior Consultant Physician and Diabetologist at Medicover Hospitals in Navi Mumbai, emphasized in an interview with HT Lifestyle, "Unhealthy lifestyles and poor dietary choices play significant roles in the widespread physical unfitness. Many people prioritize processed, packaged, or junk foods instead of nutritious options, profoundly impacting their health and contributing to conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, digestive issues, high cholesterol, hypertension, stroke, and skin disorders."

What You Can Do Now: Dr. Manish Pendse stressed the importance of physical activity and exercise for maintaining fitness and preventing diseases. He recommended including low-impact exercises like walking, jogging, meditation, and yoga, as well as more vigorous activities such as running, cardio, weightlifting, and gym workouts in your fitness routine. Being physically active for at least 30 to 40 minutes daily can enhance metabolism and help with weight management.
