"Four killed as floods hit Pune's low-lying areas."

Pune: At least four people perished in rain-related accidents in Pune, Maharashtra, on Thursday. Several low-lying residences and residential societies in the city were flooded, and as a result, residents are being evacuated, according to officials. The deluge of rain caused mayhem in Pune.

The Pune district was placed under a "red alert" by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), advising residents to exercise caution. Due to the high rainfall threat, most districts' schools and universities have announced holidays, according to them. Since Wednesday night, there has been nonstop rain in Pune city and other sections of the district, such as Velha, Mulshi, Bhor talukas, and the catchment areas of multiple dams, including Khadakwasla.

Low-lying housing societies in the city, including those on Sinhagad Road, Bavdhan, Baner, and Deccan Gymkhana, experienced flooding and inundation. The Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) fire department and disaster management cell have started working to evacuate the stranded residents, according to the officials.

Water has been released from the reservoir following intense rains in the Khadakwasla dam's catchment area, according to Pune district collector Suhas Diwase. Due to the constant rainfall in the Khadakwasla dam's catchment areas, water is being discharged at a rate of more than 35,000 cusec and is expected to reach 45,000 cusec. Several low-lying locations along the Mutha River experienced inundation and flooding as a result of the water discharge, he said.
