 24 smuggled exotic animals rescued in Mizoram; 2 Tripura residents arrested

In recent years, more than 200 wild animals, including exotic species from Indonesia, Australia, Africa, and North America, have been saved in Mizoram, Tripura, and Assam. Mizoram Police uncovered an animal smuggling operation and saved 24 exotic wild animals from a vehicle bound for Agartala, Tripura. Two individuals from Tripura were apprehended.

The wild animals, comprising 18 snakes, 4 turtles, and 2 monkeys, were rescued from the Kanhmun area of Agartala on May 25. One individual was detained on the same day, but the investigation revealed another suspect's involvement, leading to their subsequent arrest.

Sharing details on Thursday, Mizoram Police stated, "On 25.5.2024 (Saturday) around 9:00 AM, Kanhmun Police personnel stationed at Kanhmun Police Check Gate intercepted a cab commuting between Aizawl and Agartala." They identified the driver as Chawngthanmawia (32), residing in Tudui, Tripura's Amapur area. "Upon thorough inspection, 18 snakes, 4 turtles, and 2 monkeys were discovered inside the cab and duly confiscated," they added.

Attention: Saving 24 Smuggled Exotic Animals in Mizoram Unveiled

During questioning, the driver disclosed that a person named Binoi Molsom, also known as Sanga Molsom, dispatched the "parcels" containing the exotic animals from Zodin Bus Stand in Aizawl, instructing him to deliver them to someone at Zo Sumo Travels Counter in Agartala's Samuli Bazar. Binoi Molsom (34), residing in North Tripura, was subsequently apprehended.

Inspector General of Police and Chief Public Relations Officer of Mizoram Police, Lalbiakthanga Khiangte, emphasized that the rescued exotic animals were handed over to the Range Officer of Kanhmun Forest in Mizoram. "Ensuring the safety of the wild creatures was our utmost priority, and we transferred them to the forest department," he affirmed.

Over the past few years, more than 200 wild animals, including exotic species from Indonesia, Australia, Africa, and North America, have been rescued in Mizoram, Tripura, and Assam. "An international smuggling route originates from Indonesia and neighboring nations, entering India through Myanmar, with smugglers attempting to transport them to Tripura and Assam," remarked the police.
