New Restrictions Announced for Char Dham Yatra - VIP Darshan Banned
In the first six days of the pilgrimage, until Wednesday, 334,732 people from India and abroad visited the shrines to pray.
On Thursday, the Uttarakhand government decided to stop VIP darshan at the Char Dham temples. They also banned videography and making social media reels within 50 meters of the shrines due to the increase in pilgrims, according to officials.
Devotees gathered at the Kedarnath temple during the 'Char Dham Yatra' in Rudraprayag district. Chief Minister Dhami ordered officials to suspend offline registration for three days.
Chief Secretary Radha Raturi wrote to counterparts in all states and Union territories, saying, "There is a continuous increase in the number of pilgrims visiting the Holy Char Dham in Uttarakhand this year. To manage this better, we decided not to have any 'VIP Darshan' until May 31, 2024."
"The Char Dham Yatra is running smoothly. Arrangements are in place for systematic darshan, but it has been noticed that videography and social media reels are being made in the temple premises. This causes crowds, and devotees face inconvenience. To ensure convenience, making videography and reels within 50 meters of the temple premises in Char Dham is completely banned," the letter added.
Earlier, Raturi said that mobile phone use within 200 meters of Char Dham shrines would be banned. The administration will file cases against those caught making reels and spreading misinformation about Char Dham yatra.
"Making reels with false information is a crime. If you are going on a yatra with faith, making reels near temples is wrong," she said.
The Char Dham yatra began on May 10. In the first six days, 334,732 people from India and abroad visited the shrines to pray. Registration for the yatra started on April 25, and by Thursday evening, over 270,000 devotees had registered.
In another letter to the chief secretaries of other states on April 30, the chief secretary said, "Elderly devotees with a medical history should get tested before the yatra and follow the health department's guidelines."
